The Best Outdoor Podcasts

I am a firm believer that you can never get enough of the outdoors. So while you are at work, driving your kids to soccer practice, mowing the lawn, or just sitting on the front porch drinking a cold beverage, there is no better way to get your outdoor fix than turning on a podcast. Outdoor podcasts, focused on hunting, fishing, and conservation issues, are great ways to learn new tips and tactics that you can use on your next outdoor adventure. Here is my suggested list of the best outdoor podcasts that everyone who enjoys nature should follow.

Best Outdoor Podcasts

Hunt Talk Radio– Randy Newberg the host of the TV show Fresh Tracks and the facilitator of Hunt Talk forums, is unfiltered in this extremely entertaining podcast. Newberg is remarkably humble despite being one of the most successful public land hunters on television. He gives plenty of tips he has picked up while hunting western big game, and his stories are always engaging. What makes this podcast great however is Randy’s unapologetic support for public lands, and his knowledge of their history. If you hunt, fish, camp, hike, or just enjoy the idea of public lands, this podcast is a great choice.

Nock On- World class archer and nationally renowned coach, John Dudley takes his archery company on air with Nock On Podcast. Regardless of your archery skill level his tips and techniques, along with his knowledge of equipment performance will quickly make you a better shooter. Combine the intricate details from this podcast along with the instructional Nock On YouTube channel, you will likely find the answer to almost any archery related question.

Wired to Hunt– Mark Kenyon and co-host Dan Johnson have created possibly the most comprehensive podcast focused on hunting whitetail deer. From A list guests to insight on various hunting situations, you are sure to take something away from each and every episode. Dan, an Iowa native, and Mark residing from Michigan, share their personal experiences hunting in vastly different environments that give the listener perspectives on not only hunting mature whitetail bucks, but the challenges of hunting highly pressured properties. If you are a whitetail fanatic, this podcast is well worth the time.

Bass Edge- Professional BASS anglers Aaron Martin and Kurt Dove host this bi-weekly podcast focused on everything bass fishing. They discuss everything from tournament trails to latest fishing tactics, and new products that can make your time on the water more successful.

Jay Scott Outdoors- Jay Scott, a professional hunting guide for over 20 years tackles hunting and fishing opportunities in the vast western lands. He can and does lay out all of the specific details in becoming a successful hunter and angler. Whether it be catching cutthroats on a fly or hunting Goulds turkey in Mexico, this is an incredibly entertaining podcast for those who just want to be a better outdoorsman. Rated the #1 Western Hunting and fishing podcast, it is simple to see why.

Deer University- Deer University is a relatively new podcast hosted by co-directors of the Mississippi State University Deer Lab, Dr. Bronson Strickland and Dr. Steve Demarais. They are both deer biologists, professors of wildlife management and avid deer hunters, who have dedicated their life to understanding the whitetail deer. This podcast is packed with information not only about whitetail deer, but about how to manage properties for them. I can’t say enough about the information overload you will undoubtedly hear.

Meat Eater Podcast- Likely by now you have heard of author and TV host Steven Rinella. Rinella, an incredible ambassador for hunting, fishing, and conservation, brings his notorious intellectual perspective to the Meat Eater Podcast. The Meat Eater crew discusses everything from squid jigging in the Pacific Northwest to bow fishing in South America. With a continuous guest list of biologists, field researchers, and guides, these podcasts are chuck full of interesting topics.

Orvis Fly Fishing Guide- Tom Rosenbauer author of the popular book, Reading Trout Streams, brings his extensive knowledge of catching fish on the fly to this podcast. He tackles everything from choosing the right leader, to understanding the behavior of a trout. This is a very well constructed podcast that pinpoints very complex details in an easy to understand fashion.

Nine Finger Chronicles- Dan Johnson, co-host of the Wired to Hunt podcast, also has launched his own podcast with his Nine Finger Chronicles platform. This podcast is mostly focused on gear and product reviews, but also throws in a few hunter profiles as well. Johnson does a good job of asking product reps the tough questions that every hunter needs answered before making tough purchasing decisions. Mostly focused around Whitetail hunting, the Nine Finger Chronicles is an incredibly informative podcast.

Conservation Matters-The ultimate hunter, angler, and conservationist, Shane Mahoney has finally put some of his work in podcast form. As Mike Rowe would be considered the voice for blue collar workers, Shane Mahoney is just that for conservation. Author, biologist, and spokesman for everything outdoors, Mahoney has a deep personal and intellectual perspective. These podcasts are generally a mix between his personal thoughts on current issues, and recordings of his various key note speeches. For those searching for wisdom, there is no better podcast out there.

Big Buck Registry- Jay Scott and Dusty Phillips for 4 years have hosted this weekly podcast, dedicated to the stories of great hunters and great deer. From TV personalities to the successful average Joe, The Big Buck Registry uncovers everything that made a hunt successful. Weekly deer news and tips of the week will keep you tuned in every week. As they infamously say “Can’t Wait.”

Gritty Bowmen- You can’t have a comprehensive list of the best outdoor podcasts without Gritty Bowman. Mostly centered around Western big game hunting, the Gritty crew also tackles important conservation issues and their vital perspective of public lands. Always worth a laugh or two, this podcast is a must for anyone interested in hunting the west.

Others To Consider

White Knuckle Productions- Podcast focused around whitetail deer, Jason Syens and Todd Pringnitz always have interesting guests and an insightful perspective.

Keep Hammering- Cameron Hanes is seemingly good at everything, maybe its because he works so hard at everything. Either way there is always a lot to learn from someone so successful.

iHunt Podcast- This podcast is extremely new and extremely raw, but has all the markings of a diamond in the rough. As the host continues to develop, and the guest list increases, this podcast will take off.

100% Wild- Mark Kenyon from wired to hunt teams up with Drury Outdoors to create this podcast. Very good information, but the podcasts are produced very inconsistently.

Ike Live- Some love Mike Iaconelli others just can’t stand him. Always good information on this podcast, but at times its hard to follow as it is a recording of a live streaming video, making a lot of whats going on a visual challenge.
