Friday Flicks: History of the American Wild Turkey

As turkey hunting season is in full strut throughout most of North America, we found it appropriate that this week’s Friday Flick is the “History of the American Wild Turkey.” Produced by Zero Point Zero, the Meat Eater television show, along with host Steven Rinella, take us through the ups and downs of the wild turkey’s history, and the human impact on this iconic game bird.

Rinella takes us from European contact, to the domestication of the wild turkey, and the conservation efforts that were put forth to save a species that was all but decimated on this continent. Today, the history of the American wild turkey, and the story that brought them to record numbers is the pinnacle narrative of successful conservation.

Steven Rinella, an award winning author of American Buffalo, and host of the Meat Eater television show that airs on the Sportsman Channel, has become the voice for North American sportsman. His ability to off the cuff speak knowledgeable about virtually everything from hunting, fishing, trapping and conservation, and his willingness to step forward on issues such as the transfer of public lands and the lack of delisting of recovered endangered species, has given him a voice worth listening to.
